The North fork of the American River has been mined for its gold since the days of the 49ers. At Mineral Bar, you can get a feel for that historic time, when hearty miners struggled to win a living by working the sands and gravels of the River. The signs are all around in the form of many large piles of rocks which were left behind by the miners who worked this area. Some nice nuggets have been found here, and it is still possible to find some nice flakes without too much effort. The picture at right with the buffalo nickel shows gold flakes taken from a days panning on the North Fork of the American River and Mineral Bar. If you know how to pan for gold and know where to dig, you should be able to get a similar amount with a days worth of effort. Much of this gold is flat and flaky and has been washed down from the hydraulic mines up above at places like Iowa Hill.
Both Colfax and Iowa Hill were important towns in the gold rush days, and millions of ounces of gold were harvested from these hills in the early days. If you come to stay and try your hand prospecting at Mineral Bar, you should set aside a little bit of time to visit both Colfax and Iowa Hill and see the historic sites there. The town of Iowa Hill is practically surrounded by large old hydraulic mines, locations where miners washed down the entire hillside to capture the gold located there. It is easy to see the hydraulic mines on both sides of the road just before it enters Iowa Hill.
Because it is so dense, gold likes to work its way down to the bedrock, and it's usually in the cracks and crevices of the bedrock that you will find the most gold. If you would like to read more information on placer mining in general, and some instructions on how to pan for gold, be sure to check out my website on gold panning located here: Getting to Mineral Bar is not too difficult - it is about 2 miles East of the little town of Colfax, northeast of Sacramento. The map below shows what you need to know to get there. Take the Iowa Hill Road which diverges from the frontage road on the east side of I-80. It intersects the frontage road roughly a quarter mile south of the Chevron gas station. The road down is paved all the way, but it is a little steep in places and there are a couple real sharp turns. The road is not advisable for larger motor homes, but I've had no problems getting there with my trailer.
It's a popular camp spot and usually nearly or completely full on weekends during the summer. Arriving early on Friday or on Monday are usually best if you want to camp. Even if the camp spots are full there is still plenty of day parking for non-campers. There are limited facilities: pit toilets only and no running water other than what is in the river (and that is not safe to drink). Even so, it has good gold and is less than an hour from the Sacramento area, a perfect place to get away from it all, a quiet spot well worth the time to stop and enjoy a visit to the area. The nearest supermarket in this area, which is also the best source for food and other goods, is located behind McDonald's in Colfax.

I think it's all in the Gold and Diamond Exchange in Dubai. USGS reports they import 500+ metric tons of gold per year, but does not report any mining. I would be careful because I think UAE holds all minerals as property of the Emirates.
If I were going to look I would go to the Hajar Mountains, which are a complex of igneous and sedimentary rocks, and some of the worlds most extensive exposures of ophiolites. There are reports of intrusive igneous rocks in these ophiolites in the form of sheets and dikes of plagiogranite. Hyrothermal fluids moving through those areas might have left some gold behind.
I know there are gold deposits in Saudi, but don't know the locale.
It all depends on the history of the stream. If its always been slow moving water draining non-gold-bearing rocks, then you probably won't find any placer gold. If, on the other hand, you've got an old drainage system eroding gold-bearing rocks, then you've got a better chance.
Gold is very dense, ie, its heavy (about 6 times heavier than most rocks), malleable, and resistant to erosion. Therefore you need to look in high energy parts of the stream bed. If you find magnetite (black sand), then you are looking in the right place. If there are bedrock pools right below the waterfalls, that would be a very good place to look.
There are many books on placer gold and gold panning, with some diagrams to show where gold would accumulate. You've got to think like a gold nugget, you are heavy and don't like to get washed around…where would you be hiding?
Good luck and have fun!

There is a club just started up in Northern Arkansas. To get real feedback on places to go from people who have been there I recommend that you send an e-mail to the club charterer:
I believe his name is Eric
I am also compiling a list of clubs and events on gold panning around the country and world.

I'm not sure what you mean – each and every miner who arrived in California learned at his own speed and each came to his own conclusion. There wasn't a mass exodus of miners leaving California at any time.
Many of those who came to mine for gold, ended up staying here (OK, I'M in CA) to take up farming when they realized how great the soil and climate was. The gold may have brought them here, but they stayed for personal reasons.
My mother's family came to mine for gold and then sent back home to bring the rest of the family out here. Out of 7 children, 6 of them moved to CA.
There are still gold mines in CA, especially now with gold prices to high some of the old ones have been reopened. So, I'm not sure exactly what you're asking.

NOT complete at all!!! Left out the best part!! Come on – I used to sit around and listen to the audio recordings of this 30 years ago and I remember the part about dropping coal on his foot and the part about when you get too sick, stupid and lame to work in the mine, you have to quit – it’s just the opposite with the judgin’ Do you know where I can find the rest of it?

G'day Rockhound,
Thank you for your question.
The Sarhad Development Authority (SDA) has reported several gold bearing horizons in Awireth-Shogor-Sweakht region of Chitral. The mineralization is located in the Sewakht formation which comprises of greenschiests, limestones, ferruginous dolomite carbonate, phyllites, sandstones and breccias.
I enclose sources for your reference.

It is because you forgot to convert the weight
2.20 kg = 2.2(1000) = 2200 g.
2200/18.9 = 116.4 cm^3
And your unit is wrong.

India imports Gold from everywhere.
True India has some go;d mines but there is simply not much Industrial production. Also Indian use gold extensively on various occasions so obviously Price do go HIgh locally and internationally..
Good job Kearns! Ya'll beat them miners!!!!!!!:)
you can’t generalize a group of people you don’t represent
it took advantage of the wieght of gold. gold is a very heavy element and when you pan for gold, you remove the less dense and lighter material using the flow of water. all that is left is the heavier elements mostly gold that can then be purified by melting out the waste.

Any place in the Colorado Rockies can point you to 'panning'. Our group got supplies and guidance in the Buena Vista-area. (We didn't 'strike it rich', but had a lot of fun wading the creeks, esp. when it's so 'hot' in the valleys and lowlands.)
it is. its less common now though. but there are some places that you can pan for gold. it may cost you some money though, so if your willing to pay im sure you could find gold.

gold panning is a type of placer mining. It is old-school and small scale. Placer mining simply refers to deposits that are not lode deposits (lode deposits being contained within a host rock, like a vein). Placer deposits used to be veins that are weathered (the mountain with the vein in it is completely washed away over millions of years) and transported, and concentrated by water.
